Intuitive Eating is a weight-inclusive, evidence based philosophy that makes you the expert of your body. It has nothing to do with dieting, meal plants, nutrition fads, and honestly has very little to do with food, rather has everything to do with our behaviour around food. Intuitive Eating takes the focus away from the external physical appearance of the body and focuses the work on the internal emotional foundations from which we choose to feed and move our bodies.
Intuitive Eating was coined by Evelyn Tribole, RD, and Elyse Resch, RDN, in the 1990s, and is founded upon the following 10 core principles.
Reject the Diet Mentality
Honour Your Hunger
Make Peace with Food
Challenge the Food Police
Discover the Satisfaction Factor
Feel Your Fullness
Cope With Your Emotions with Kindness
Respect Your Body
Movement – Feel The Difference
Honor Your Health – Gentle Nutrition
Intuitive Eating is not:
A strict rule book
A practice that promotes intentional weight-loss/gain
A fatphobic approach to health
Just eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full
Intuitive eating means to break-free from diet culture and dieting. It place trust in the body and teaches mindful, non-restrictive eating. It focuses on mind/body, emotional and intuitive connection.
The main goal of Intuitive Eating is to foster a healthy relationship with food and body.
