Vitamin D + Sunshine

๐ŸŒž Did you know that Vitamin D is not technically a vitamin? Itโ€™s more of a hormone, since we humans have the capacity to produce it on our own. ๐Ÿ”… Vitamin D is one of the most common deficiencies in the world. ๐ŸŒž The liver and kidneys convert vitamin D into the active hormone calcitriol. ๐Ÿ”… Calcitriol is vital for the absorption and regulation of calcium and phosphorus in the body. ๐ŸŒž Every single cell in your body contains a receptor for this hormone. ๐Ÿ”… Vitamin D is vital for bone health and extremely important for the prevention of so many conditions such as autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, heart conditions and inflammatory bowel diseases. ๐ŸŒž We get vitamin D primarily from sun exposure.๐Ÿ™Œ ๐Ÿ”… Sunshine makes us happy ๐Ÿฅฐ It increases the hormone serotonin in our brain which boosts our mood! ๐ŸŒž 20 minutes in the sun for a fair skinned person results in around 20,000 International Units. The darker a persons skin the more UV blocking melanin it will contain, therefore needing a little longer sun exposure. ๐Ÿ”… Fat in the body, stores vitamin D during periods of sunlight and releases it when the sunlight is gone. ๐ŸŒž There are dietary sources of vitamin D such as some varieties of mushrooms, fatty fish or fortified foods. These do not provide large amounts of vitamin D unless eaten in excess, daily. ๐Ÿ”… In the summer it is very easy to get outside daily for 10-20 minutes and get ample amounts of vitamin D. ๐ŸŒž In the winter, it isnโ€™t as easy. Vitamin D supplements are a great way to get enough in the months where sun exposure isnโ€™t as readily available. ๐Ÿ”… Vitamin D3 is the most absorb-able form of Vitamin D. Always check with your health care professional before adding new supplements into your regime. ๐ŸŒž It is not possible to overdose on vitamin D through sunlight, however too much vitamin D through supplementation can cause harm. ๐Ÿ”… So get out there and enjoy that sunshine! In moderate doses it has amazing health benefits! PS. Even on cloudy days your skin can still absorb some sunlight, just not as much ๐Ÿ™ƒ
