Your Built-in Detox Organ!

Detoxification at it's finest! Your liver and it's health are uber important to your overall wellness.

Did you know that your liver makes 1 g of cholesterol and 1 litre of bile daily! Wowza! You may be wondering why your liver makes cholesterol! Well, cholesterol is a building block for hormones - It's a basic molecule from which steroid hormones like cortisol, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are made of! Cholesterol is also used to make bile salts which emulsifies dietary fat allowing for lipase to breakdown fat in the body. Not only all of that, it is also an essential part of cell membranes and acts as an antioxidant! Many people consume cholesterol and when there is an abundance of cholesterol in the body, your liver controls the amount and eliminates any excess through bile - can you see why having a healthy liver is really important especially when we are talking high cholesterol?!


Having a healthy liver is not only important for the creation of cholesterol it also metabolizes hormones and excretes them through bile. It detoxifies internal and external substances - It's detoxification system helps the body to take care of heavy metals, caffeine, alcohol, drugs, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, additives and so much more!


What happens when the liver is on over drive? Fatigue, lowered immune response, hormonal imbalances, and blood glucose imbalances. We don't want that!

So, how can you help keep your liver in tip top shape so it can continue to metabolize, detoxify, and keep your body running smoothly? Well, you can ensure you are consuming enough complete protein, avoid consuming stimulants like caffeine and alcohol in excess (don't worry if you have a few too many on a Saturday night your liver will be there to get you back up and running as long as you continue to support it!), increase your fibre intake, eat a lot of leafy greens, leave 12 hours between your last meal of the day and first meal of the day to give your body time to digest, rest and reset, stay hydrated and eat lots of antioxidant rich foods. Dandelion tea and milk thistle are great teas to sip on that your liver will appreciate! Show your liver some love by consuming liver supporting foods like bitter greens, lemon, cruciferous vegetables, grapefruit and beets!

Ps. Did you know that grapefruit will inhibit the enzymes that helps the liver metabolize certain medications?! Kinda neat - but not so neat if you are taking a medication that will be affected by grapefruit, something to me mindful of.
